                              (b) Talking

                              (c)  Reading

Pupils are encouraged to work to their full potential in all of these areas.  Our structured language scheme is in line with the S.O.E.D Guidelines on English Language 5-14.

                             (c) Shape, position and movement

                             (d) Problem solving

The School provides opportunities for pupils to become proficient in all areas of mathematics by encouraging them to work to their full potential through a structured scheme relating to the 5-14 Guidelines on Mathematics.

Environmental Studies: includes these areas of study

Health Education: our specific focus is Healthy and Safe Living and all classes follow a progression of topics throughout the school.

Religious and Moral Education: is an integral part of our curriculum and encompasses three areas

Christianity

Other World Religions

Personal Search

All teachers strive to have a balance of these outcomes in their teaching.

There are also weekly assemblies taken by the school chaplain or Head teacher.

Any parent who does not wish his child to take part in Religious and Moral Education should inform the school in writing.

School Library: The library is now fully operational and  is open to pupils every Friday.

 ASSESSMENT & RECORD KEEPING

Assessment is an on-going procedure.  All teachers keep detailed records of each child’s progress.  National Testing is carried out in Language, Maths and Writing only when the class teacher is confident that the pupil is ready to move on.

Detailed pupil Profiles are completed at the end of P7 for transfer to Secondary School.

The definition of the levels are:

Level A- achieved by most pupils in P1-3

Level B- achieved by some pupils in P3 but by most pupils in P 4

Level C- achieved by some pupils in P 5 but by most pupils in P6

Level D- achieved by some pupils in P 6 but by most pupils in P 7

Level E – achieved by some pupils in P 7

HOMEWORK: It is school policy that homework is given on a regular basis, the amount given depending on the age of the child, to reflect the work being done in school.  Parents are urged to supervise this activity. Home work diaries operate in the upper classes.

SETTING TARGETS /RAISING STANDARDS

Target setting is a National incentive in order to raise standards in Scottish schools.

Numeracy and Literacy are the key areas and every school is expected to make a contribution to national improvement by setting its own targets for development.

The table below allows you to compare Banavie’s attainment with the National and Highland average

PARENTS' EVENING

Parents’ Evenings are held in November and June. Parents are invited into school to view their children’s work and to discuss their performance with the class teacher. A formal report is sent home prior to the June appointment.

An immediate concern can be easily dealt with by contacting school at any time and an appointment can be made with the class teacher or Mrs Dunham.

ASSEMBLIES

Weekly assemblies are taken by either Mrs Dunham or a visiting speaker.  A series of themes are planned for each term and a song. Story or bible reading are included.

Twice a term we hold our CELEBRATION ASSEMBLIES. Here pupils are rewarded with a certificate for either good work or behaviour undertaken in class, or around school. This links to our House point system.
